Should I do a postdoc?

I’ve been looking for jobs for a little while now, mainly outside of academia, and the number one piece of feedback I’ve been getting is that companies are looking for applicants with postdoctoral experience.

I can’t help but feel that if I’m not interested in continuing in academia, I should make the move as soon as possible and hearing this has been frustrating to say the least. But there’s many new skills to be gained relating to research, project management, applying for grants and independent working to be gained from a postdoc that will be appealing to those hiring, whether or not it’s in academia.

This article on the NatureJobs blog by Søren-Peter Olesen, describes how doing one postdoc (but not two or three) can actually help your chances of getting hired within industry.
