How to pitch to a science editor

Great resource from scidev.net being sent around the science communication community in the UK that I thought I’d share here:

How to pitch to Science Editors

Quick tips:

  • Editors want to know you’ve researched the topic and their outlet
  • Keep pitch short, accurate, simple, and suitable for the article type
  • Be friendly and flexible with the editor, and respect their guidance

One important point they touch on is whether to email or call an editor to give them updates or remind them about your story – Personally, I hate people calling me unless it’s urgent or absolutely necessary (mainly so I have a record of what I’ve been asked to do!), but others prefer calls so basically, you should find out their preference and contact them that way.
